I love to find small, out of the way campgrounds that are passed up by the RV crowds. They’re even better if it’s a campground with a view. And if it’s remote, well, it just got moved to the top of my list. This is the way I feel about Billy Creek Campground in the Quachita Mountains of Oklahoma. This is an older campground mostly forgotten by all except us hardcore campers. It sets way back off the beaten path nestled among the hardwood forests of the Quachita’s. If you’re looking for electrical hookups, hot showers and a recreational center, well brother, you’re not going to find it at Billy Creek Campground!
I actually found Billy Creek Campground by mistake. I was driving the forest service roads looking for a place to do some primitive camping when I saw the sign for this campground. I thought it would be another one of those yuppie campgrounds will all the modern amenities but fortunately I was wrong.
What you will find at this wonderful campground is majestic trees. Hickory, Oak, Blackjack, Elm and just about any kind of hardwood you could think of. Plus, as a special surprise, this campground lies next to Billy Creek itself! Now you’re beginning to see why so many call this the best campground in Oklahoma! There are a few camping places that overlook this little mountain stream. Each camp site has a fire ring, grill, dirt pad and a post for hanging lanterns on. It does have a vault type restroom. At least you’re spared from having to go in the woods. There is also a water spigot at the campground, so you have fresh water. And that’s pretty much it for ‘modern’ conveniences! But then again, that’s what we’re looking for isn’t it? A campground sitting back in the woods where you can wake up to nature’s song, not some freakin’ generator blaring!
If you’re into hiking, you’ll love Bill Creek Campground also. There are two hiking trails you can access. One is about 8 miles and the other is somewhere around 15 miles long. One loops around the Staircase mountains and brings you right back into the campground itself. The other joins up with the Quachita trail which you could walk all the way into Arkansas from!
Although this wouldn’t be the place to camp with your horse, the area does have several really nice equestrian trails. These are a lot longer than the hiking trails and a person and their horse could experience some true mountain wilderness by getting off the beaten path.
So if you’re looking for some peace and quiet on your next camping trip, give Billy Creek Campground in the Quachita Mountains of Oklahoma a try.
