Choosing A LightWeight Tunnel Tent

Easy to erect and relatively lightweight, the three man tunnel tent can be the perfect solution for temporary shelter in a variety of different situations. From an overnight trip with a small group of people to a long expedition that requires you to haul your equipment over rough terrain, these compact tents offer the perfect place to store your gear and lay your weary head.

Tunnel tents are frequently equipped with an area for sleeping toward the middle and two entrances on either end. When setting up your tent it is a good idea to use one entrance to get in and out and the other porch area for equipment storage. If you find yourself camping in rough weather, be sure to position the entrance in an area well shielded from the elements to keep the inside as warm and dry as possible when you are entering and exiting the tent. When you find yourself camping in the heat of the summer, it might be best to leave both ends open to allow air flow through the tent to cool it down.

There are several different models of lightweight 3 man tunnel tents available and the one you choose will depend on your own specific needs. The smallest, most lightweight version is called for if you will be hiking for long periods of time over terrain that is bumpy or changes elevations. Choose one that can be easily disassembled and put together when you anticipate moving to a different location every night. For trips where you will not be covering a lot of distance but you will be spending long periods of time in the tent, you can pick a model that is a little heavier, more durable and has more room in which to move around.

Even though it is designed to accommodate three people, the three man tunnel tent may be a bit of a misnomer. Three adults will likely be quite cramped in the standard configuration, especially if the trip is of any significant duration. If you want to have enough room for three people to fit comfortably, you would be better off looking toward a tent that is a bit roomier.
