Climbing Mt Mera: A beginners’ Guide

There are many sports that are gaining popularity these days and climbing is one of them with more and more people of both sexes and all ages getting into the action!  There are great spots all over the world but one of the most popular destinations has always been the Himalayas with Mount Everest being the the destination all climbers dream of attempting but only a few ever do. But there is one mountain in the area that is far easier to accomplish for anyone and that is Mt Mera.

This peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal and you are permitted to climb it even if you don’t have prior experience. Lying South of Everest, it is located between the scenic valleys of the Hinku and Hongu.  The route is fairly easy in itself except that sometimes bad weather in the form of heavy snow and crevasse fields can make your trip a bit demanding and you are also climbing to great altitude, so altitude sickness is a real risk that you have to be aware of and prepared for.  If you plan to do this climb, it is best to keep an eye any weather patterns and speak with people who recently climbed in the area to get an idea of what to expect during your climb.  The numerous opportunities to view the local wildlife and the spectacular views far outweigh any obstacles you may come across.

Another thing you should consider while making your plans to climb this peak is finding an experienced guide to lead your expedition. The best way to get information on finding a guide is by asking other people who have done the trek.  They will be able to tell you about their experiences and what to avoid and what to look for.  Alternately, a search of the internet will turn up much information of finding guides, booking guides and any other information you need to make your trek a success.

The other important thing to consider when making plans for your expedition is what gear and equipment you will need.  Take into consideration the climate, the dangers, your level of experience and how comfortable you will need and want to be when choosing your gear.  Standard climbing gear is obvious but this is not your ordinary trekking peak so more gear may be needed.  When dressing for your trek, layers are a must and it is a good idea to have a waterproof and insulated shell that will shield you from all sorts of weather.  Other things like goggles, ski masks and a compass are good things to have in your backpack. You also need insulated mountaineering boots capable of taking crampons and an ice axe.

Once you have figured the guide situation and you have all your necessary gear in order, you have to get to Nepal.  That means you will need to figure out your flights and any ground transportation you will need.  You will also need accommodations if you plan on staying in the area for any length of time before or after your expedition.  Many international airlines offer scheduled services to Nepal and those airlines include Royal Nepal Airlines, British Airways, China Southwest Airlines, India Air, Pakistan Air and Singapore Airlines.  Your airplane ticket will probably be the most expensive part of the whole trip.  Prices for a round trip will depend on where you are traveling from and range between $800 and $2000 dollars.  These prices are for economy class so it will cost a lot more if you plan to fly first class.  Depending on your itinerary, you may have one or more stopovers, eventually landing at the Trivuwan International Airport in Kathmandu.

It may not be Everest but it is challenging and it will be a climb you will not soon forget.  It is also a goal that you can meet.  While all climbers dream of tackling Everest, it is a goal that many cannot and will not meet in their lifetime. It is a goal within every climber can reach and should.  There is minimal red tape to go through like when you are planning an expedition to Mount Everest and it is more accessible and less dangerous.
