Bear Grylls Survival Series Parang Reviewed

In continuing the series on Bear Grylls Survival gear, this week we look at the survival parang.

Now this is a really series piece of metal and is one that most of us will have little use for because it is really meant for deep jungle pathclearing and that sort of thing. If you aren’t planning to go into a tropical jungle you probably don’t need one.  That said when I was travelling around Southern Africa in my old Land Rover I used to keep a similar hunk of steel with me as it was useful around the camp for chopping small bits of wood and would also have worked as a serious crime buster if anyone got to close.

As a modern take on the old Machete (or Panga, as we used to say in Africa) they don’t get much better than this. It is made of high carbon steel that should hold an edge, is niecely shaped for all-day chopping. At the price you’d hope so. A cheap machete in some jungle shouldn’t cost more than a few dollars. This will set you back about $30, which is not bad value but be sure it is the tool you need for the job before going out to get one.
