A lot of people get hung up on survival kits. I’ve always taken the view that you don’t need a specially-made kit and are better off getting good camping and survival gear that you use all the time and then having that ready for use in an emergency. That said I know a lot of people like to be able to buy a kit that has everything in one place that you can then forget about.
The disadvantage is that you are not getting to use your survival gear regularly so you don’t know if it will work in the real world. Also, you won’t be familiar with it when having to use it in a stressful situation.
Yet if you do want a kit for your pack or car, this one is a pretty good choice.
What’s also useful is that the Bear Grylls survival kit has a little sheet covering survival basics which can be handy for people who don’t know where to start. It is reasonably priced so you can have it as a backup to your main gear. It has a small and light Gerber folding knife and a blade is definitely an essential. It also helps you start a fire and signal for help with a whistle. There is also a snare wire. Now I’m n0t a huge fan of snares and fishing hooks. Most survival situations are resolved one way or another within a week or two, which is well inside the time on which you can use your bodies reserves. Your priorities should be on keeping warm, getting water and getting out or calling for help instead of wasting time trying to snare a small animal. You could easily get the essentials for a lower price by having a whistle, knife and fire starter. But if you want to give a gift or just have something you can pack away and know is ready for an emergency this is not a bad option.
