I’ve owned Gerber knives in various shapes and sizes for a long time. While I don’t consider them the very finest knives made, I do consider them good quality and dependable at reasonable prices. So I was excited when I purchased my first Gerber Prodigy Survival Knife. I was really looking forward to putting it through its paces. This is a very popular survival knife with a huge following, so I wanted to see if it would live up to its hype.
As any good Knife lover does when getting a new knife, I went over every inch of this knife when I received it. I then checked out the sheath, which is top quality itself. While many knifemakers put a lot of thought and effort into their knives then saddle them with the cheapest sheaths they can, the sheath that came with my Gerber Prodigy Survival Knife is just as good as the knife itself.
The nylon sheath comes with a leg strap. The knife itself is MIRS compliant as well. The sheath is MOLLE compliant and can be attached to a wide variety of combat harnesses. The sheath is friction locked design that holds the knife securely.
The knife itself is a Jack Freeman design. If you know Jack, you know he designs some of the most beautiful and functional survival knives around. Gerber was wise to hire him to design some of their survival knives.
The knife itself is half serrated. There was a time when I hated serrations on knives. Probably because when they first started coming out, only cheapo knives had serrations. That’s no longer true as is evident by the Gerber Survival Knife. The serrations are razor sharp and will cut through a lot of different materials and do it quickly.
The backbone of the knife is nice and thick. No wimply, flimsy knife here. It has the strength to stand up to repeated uses and the blade will remain sharp for quite a while.
The Gerber Prodigy Survival Knife will not only be your best friend in a survival situation, but it makes a great camping knife, which is what I use mine for. It gets used hard and has never let me down!
