How to Choose the Right Camping Cot

A camping cot is great for camping as well as overnight guests.  There are many types of cots available, from folding canvas to those that are lightweight and include a bed-like mattress.  Camp cots will also vary in size. Get the dimensions of the cot and make sure the sleep surface is sufficient for your needs.  Weight and height restrictions are clearly listed on the cot and will be your best guide.

Depending on features and construction, the weight and sturdiness of a camp cot can vary considerably.  Here are three models that consistently get excellent reviews:

The Coleman folding cot Trailhead II can comfortably sleep a person up to 6’6” with a maximum weight capacity of 300 pounds.  The cot measures a roomy 30” (W) x 80” (L) x 17” (H) and folds compactly for easy carrying.  A convenient shoulder-sling bag is included.

The Teton XXL Sports Outfitter cot is perfect for when you need a larger camp cot.  This oversized cot is very sturdy and measures a huge 85” (L) x 40” (W) while supporting up to 600 pounds.  The cot weighs approximately 25 pounds, but is a great solution if you do not have to transport it very far.  It comes with a storage bag and a separate foam pad can be purchased for added comfort.

The Bunkhouse Deluxe II is one of the most popular Coleman camping cots and offers affordability with many features of the more expensive cots.  The Bunkhouse Deluxe II is a folding cot that measures 80” (L) x 30” (W) x 15” (H).  It can accommodate a person up to 6’8” with a weight capacity of 275 pounds.  A foam mattress and spring construction allow for a comfortable night’s sleep and the bi-fold frame folds in half for easy transport and storage.

If you are planning to use a camp cot for hunting or camping, consideration needs to be given to the amount of room you have for transporting your equipment, as well as how far you will need to carry your equipment once you reach your camp sight or cabin.  Folding camping cots are convenient, provide a great night’s sleep and keep you up off the ground, but some can be cumbersome and heavy.

If purchasing online, be sure to read reviews before you buy. Check places like Campers Anonymous, Amazon or Camping World to read real reviews to make sure that the cot you choose will be a good fit for your needs.
