For most hunters, they’re perfectly comfortable taking any legal deer. But for a select few, their main goal is to take a buck deer that is bigger than the average deer. It takes a lot of time and dedication, not to mention luck, to be able to outsmart any deer, let alone a bruiser trophy deer. Since I’ve taken my share of big bucks over the years, I thought I’d share some of my trophy deer hunting tips with you. Hopefully you’ll put them to good use and you can take your own trophy buck this Fall.
For starters, you have to know that a trophy deer is actually living where you want to hunt. If not, then you must get out and find an area where a trophy deer lives. You can hunt harder than anyone, but if a big buck isn’t living where you’re hunting, your not going to kill a big buck! I know that sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people say “I’m going to hold out for a trophy buck this year” and they can’t even tell you whether or not one lives in their hunting area!
The next tip for taking a trophy buck is stand placement. Although I prefer a ladder stand, others may prefer climbers or strap on treestands. You want you stand in a tree and blended in so the deer can’t see you. If you’re using a climber, this means you’ll have to get higher than someone using a strap on type stand. They can put their stand so that it blends into the tree limbs and such, but you must have a clean smooth tree. This will make you stand out against the background.
If you’re afraid of heights, then a ground blind is the way to go. Although I will use a commercial ground blind if it has been in the area quite a while, I much prefer natural blinds. My favorite are tree tops because I can get into them and create a place to sit and wait. Unfortunately many times a tree does not fall where you need it! It’s these times I turn to a commercial ground blind.
Next is scent control. A deer’s number one survival sense is his sense of smell. Always place your stand or blind downwind of where you expect the deer to show up. Furthermore, only hunt that area when the wind is blowing out of the right direction. This is something you must take into consideration when placing a stand. Always resist the temptation to hunt the stand if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction.
